I had an experience I thought I'd share with you- moving!
I still have faith.
As Captain on flight AAL2083 from SJU to FLL I had a touching experience last week. I thought you might be interested. Before leaving for San Juan at 6:40 am. (my third San Juan turnaround for the week) the station manager in Ft. Lauderdale told me we’d be bringing back a fallen soldier from Iraq and we should expect the fire department to have water cannon salute when we taxi to the gate upon our return to FLL. When we arrived in San Juan my flight dispatcher called me to confirm the news of the returning soldier.
After speaking with the dispatcher I decided to go down on the ramp and see if the ground crew had news of this and to make sure this hero was properly treated while boarding my airplane. I passed under the belly of my 757 toward the aft cargo compartment I saw the flag draped casket of this hero alone in a baggage cart, and decided to stand with this solider through boarding. Shortly thereafter the ground crew came and properly loaded this soldier on my airplane- I was misty eyed.
When we were descending into FLL I made the following PA to the passengers. “Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your captain. Today we’ve had the distinct privilege of bringing home a fallen soldier from Iraq. As is customary when bringing a hero home, the Ft. Lauderdale airport will have a water cannon salute for this soldier. Please do not be alarmed when you see the rescue equipment along side our airplane as we taxi to our gate……”
After landing we taxied between and underneath the beautiful water cannon salute to this hero, but it gets better. Approaching the gate I noticed military personnel, pilots from several airlines, the TSA, and our station personnel all lined up at attention on either side of our aircraft- the soldier’s family standing immediately behind my guide man, dressed in black, and as expected in tears.
But my biggest surprise came after we were parked at the gate. When I opened the cockpit door, I noticed that there wasn’t a dry eye on the airplane; when I got into the terminal all of the airlines (American, United) had ceased their boarding and other duties, and all had moved down the terminal and come to the window of our gate to salute this fallen soldier. There were many teary eyes, including mine. It was a beautiful show of respect.
Just thought I’d share this with you.
